Biography

Stuart originally trained as an actor and has enjoyed a varied career including theatre; television, musicals, film, radio and voice-over. As a singer, song-writer, Stuart has also recorded albums of his own work. Stuart made his operatic debut in 2011 after studying with Julian Gavin and coaching with both Phillip Thomas and David Syrus. He has since steadily built a career as a dramatic bass-baritone. Stuart continues his studies with Phillip Thomas and Janice Chapman.

Stuart has been awarded scholarships from the Wagner Society; The Mastersingers – The Howard Goodall Scholarship; Grange Park Opera and he also became the first ever recipient of The Carole Rees Award for Advanced Musical Studies again from The Mastersingers. Stuart has performed in masterclasses with Sir John Tomlinson, Petra Lang, Dame Anne Evans and Dame Josephine Barstow.

Recent seasons include Kurwenal Tristan und Isolde (Revival); Biterolf Tannhäuser, Kurwenal Tristan und Isolde and Hagen Der Ring des Nibelungen (Longborough Festival Opera); Scarpia Tosca; Pizzaro Fidelio (OperaHerts); Sweeney Todd Sweeney Todd (VivoD’Arte); Amfortas Parsifal (Elemental Opera) and his house debut covering Dr Schon/Jack the Ripper in Lulu for English National Opera.

Other operatic engagements include Hagen Götterdämmerung (Longborough Festival Opera); Baron Dauphol La traviata directed by Dr. Jonathan Miller, Dutchman (cover) Der fliegende Holländer, Montano Otello and Sciarrone Tosca (Dorset Opera Festival); Nightwatchman Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; Alberich Götterdämmerung (cover) for Saffron Opera Group; Hunding Die Walkure (Act 2) for Berwick Festival Opera; Marullo Rigoletto (Grange Park Opera); Escamillo Carmen (Impact Opera, New Vic Opera).

On the concert platform performances include Brahms Ein deutsches requiem, Handel Messiah, Mozart Requiem and Solemn Vespers, Rossini Petite messe solennelle, Charpentier Messe de Minuit, Monteverdi Beatus Vir and Pergolassi Magnificat.

Engagements in the current season include recitals including the music of Brahms; Finzi; Schubert and Weill and Scarpia for Oxford Opera.
